Songs born out of near-death experiences are usually the best songs, right?
'The Spit' is the title of the new punk rock banger from Brisbane's Shutup Shutup Shutup.
Once known as Release The Hounds (yeah, not the best name), the trio ditched the old moniker in favour of their current name (which is slightly better), this new song from the band comes off their upcoming release, 'Back To The Start'.
Lyrically, this new track deals with a near-death experience that vocalist and guitarist, Liam Edwards had.
"I went swimming on an unpatrolled beach at the Gold Coast called The Spit. The beach has this huge ominous sand pumping jetty that is renowned for creating rips in the water. I got stuck in a rip and dragged out past the end of the jetty. I was panicking pretty hard and the waves were smashing me really close to the pylons, all I could think was 'this is it, I am going to die!'."

Obviously, Edwards didn't die, thankfully, and was able to write a pretty good punk song for our listening pleasure because of it. So it's a win-win for everybody!
funnily enough, Triple J actually used to flog their last single 'Sleeping Bags' really hard (back in the Release The Hounds days) but the song was pulled due to a complaint about the song's "violent lyric content". After hearing the song myself, I can totally get the complaint...but that don't mean the claim wasn't utterly stupid to begin with. Ah, 2016 - get rid of something that you don't like and ruin other people's enjoyment.
Anyway, you can catch Shutup Shutup Shutup at their single launch show for 'The Spit' on Friday, September 23rd at Brisbane's Crowbar.
Also, now I have that The Black Eyed Peas song stuck in my head. Thanks for nothing, guys!
