Should Canberra Have Its Own Entertainment Precincts? The Choice Is Yours

You have until this week to decide.

The ACT government is so committed to establishing Australia's capital as a world class destination that it is calling on locals to voice their opinions on the possible introduction of exclusive entertainment precincts throughout the state.

Late last year, the Live Music Office and MusicACT outlined a 25-step plan to enhance Canberra's music scene and as per its Urban Sounds Discussion Paper, locals are being asked to have their say on precincts that would include music venues, restaurants and licensed premises, all while considering the needs of different businesses, residents and entertainment spaces.

"Canberra is really setting a leading example nationally here, tackling the tough questions faced universally around the country with setting the ground rules for vibrant and sustainable night economies," Live Music Office policy director, John Wardle, told theMusic.

"[The Urban Sounds Discussion Paper] investigates noise levels, information resources and residential soundproofing responses for entertainment areas, town centres, mixed use and industrial areas to support and provide more certainty to live music and performance venues in the ACT.

"How good would it be if Darwin, Perth, Sydney, Townsville and other cities around the country used what Canberra are doing here as a template to deliver entertainment precincts.

"If Canberra can get this right it's going to be a seriously cool little capital."

Meanwhile, MusicACT President Gavin Findlay said the precincts could be a game-changer for the ACT.

"Canberra produces so many great musicians and we can set the pace nationwide for regulation which fosters live music and new venues," Findlay said.

"Our urban centres have been changing dramatically with new residential and commercial developments and now urgently need to find the right balance — one that allows outdoor events, clubs and music venues to operate to their full potential, at the same time as ensuring residents can continue to enjoy a good night’s sleep.

"We need to work together to keep building our city’s culture."

Urban Sounds community consultation is open now until COB this Friday.

Those wishing to get involved in the process can do so by participating in an online forum, suggesting the best locations to establish a precinct in Canberra, or by submitting a detailed proposal.
