Richard ‘Rockpile’ Jones, known as the vocalist and guitarist of Ol’ 55, has passed away. He was 74.

News of the Australian rocker’s passing was confirmed by his former bandmate, Wilbur Wilde, confirmed the news, along with Ol’ 55, who both posted touching tributes on Facebook yesterday (6 October).

“Very sad to hear of the passing of Richard ‘Rockpile’ Jones,” Wilde wrote on social media.

Describing Jones as a “true original” and “much-loved” member of Ol’ 55, Wilde pointed to Jones’ inimitable falsetto – the “unforgettable voice” of the single, Looking for an Echo, which powered the rock revival of the 1970s.

Wilde continued, “Some of the best moments I’ve had on stage have been with Rockpile. He always wowed audiences (and all the chicks!)

“Vale Rockpile. Thanks for the music and the memories.”

The band added, “It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of the man with Golden Tonsils; Richard ‘Rockpile’ JONES and rocking guitar.

“Our deepest condolences go out to his family, wife Kathy, sons Adam and Chad, their wives Mary and Tia, and grandchildren. Also his sister Sue husband Mick and family.

“Fly high, thanks for the many years of top 10 hits. Gone but the music lives on.”

No cause of death has been revealed.

Jones was a key member of the Australian rock band Ol’ 55. Although he wasn’t the group’s original singer, he made an incredible impact with his distinctive high falsetto and wide vocal range.

He’s heard on the 1976 single Looking for an Echo, the band’s notable take on the song written by American songwriter Richard Reicheg. It reached #9 in Australia and marks one of Ol’ 55’s signature recordings. He’s also recognised for his performances on the songs C’mon Let’s Do It and (Feels Like A) Summer’s Night.

Jones joined Ol’ 55 for reunions and teamed up with his bandmates, Wilbur Wilde, Frankie J. Holden, Jimmy Manzie and Geoff Plummer as The Fives for a concert celebrating Mushroom Records’ tenth anniversary in 1982.

His legacy is ultimately tied to timeless songs recorded with Ol’ 55.
