US legends Red Hot Chili Peppers were forced to cancel a headlining performance at the annual KROQ Weenie Roast at the last minute yesterday due to the sudden announcement that frontman Anthony Kiedis had been rushed to hospital and the band have today revealed the reason behind the hospitalisation.

In a statement posted to the RHCP website, the rock outfit announced that Kiedis was suffering from "complications from the intestinal flu".

Though he is expected to make a full recovery, the 53-year-old's illness has resulted in the band also cancelling an upcoming concert for iHeart Radio in California.

Fans were seriously concerned due to the last-minute cancellation as Alternative Press report that Kiedis left the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre in an ambulance after suffering extreme stomach pain.

RHCP bassist Flea told the 16,000-strong crowd, "Anthony is on his way to the hospital right now and we're unable to play for you this evening.

"We are devastated about it. We’re really sad, we love you so much. We live to rock. We live to fucking dig deep into the depths of our heart and rock. But unfortunately, there’s a medical thing that happened and he needed to deal with it."

Shortly after the concert drummer Chad Smith tweeted a message of support to Kiedis.

Other bands who featured on the line-up included Panic! At The Disco, Aussie duo Empire Of The Sun, Garbage and more, as well as a surprise set from Blink-182.

Earlier this month, RHCP announced they will be releasing their first album in five yearsThe Getaway, next month.
