Rdio Australia Unveils Its Most Popular Music For 2014

10 December 2014 | 5:57 pm | Staff Writer

Aussies Chet Faker, Iggy Azalea, 5 Seconds Of Summer and Sia continue their cross-platform year-end domination

Streaming audio service Rdio has revealed the results for its most-listened-to music this year, with Brit troubadour Ed Sheeran pulling out an impressive performance to take out the honours of both top album (X) and top artist in general.

The infuriatingly ubiquitous Happy, by unstoppable hat enthusiast Pharrell Williams, nabbed the title of top song for the year, just ahead of Aussie songstress Sia and Chandelier. Impressively, newcomers Milky Chance offered the third-most-loved track of the year with Stolen Dance, ahead of arguably better-known cuts such as Problem (Ariana Grande, #5), Am I Wrong? (Nico & Vinz, #7), Addicted To You (Avicii, #8), Trumpets (Jason Derulo, #9) and the chart-beating High (Peking Duk, #10).

In the albums stakes, Aussie Chet Faker makes the strongest local entry, with Built On Glass taking the #3 spot, just behind the 100 Hot Songs Of Today compilation, but ahead of Brit sensation Sam Smith, whose In The Lonely Hour grabbed #4.

Iggy Azalea couldn't quite match her YouTube efforts in the local stakes, with The New Classic rounding out the top five, but her dominance is unquestionable in the global results, where her incendiary album (the sole effort from an Australian to appear) topped the list. She keeps up the good work for the top global tracks, too, with Fancy (#8) doing the representation honours on that ladder.

Fellow Aussies 5 Seconds Of Summer and Sia also make the top-ten albums list for listeners Down Under, with their respective efforts 5 Seconds Of Summer and 1000 Forms Of Fear earning the #8 and #9 positions.

In terms of tracks recommended to listeners by Rdio, we see a few more Aussie names emerge - The Preatures (Two Tone Melody, #4), DMA's (Delete, #6), Violent Soho (Fur Eyes, #10), One Day (Love Me Less, #12), What So Not (Tell Me, #14) , The Delta Riggs (The Record's Flawed, #18), The Griswolds (Beware The Dog, #19) and The Kite String Tangle (Arcadia, #20).
