'Bohemian Rhapsody' Is Officially The Most Streamed Song From The 20th Century

Queen's iconic single, Bohemian Rhapsody, is officially the most streamed song from the 20th century. 

Universal Music Group have today confirmed that the 1975-released track has surpassed 1.6 billion streams globally for both the song and music video video across all streaming services. 

Bohemian Rhapsody has beat out the likes of Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit, Guns N’Roses' Sweet Child O’Mine and November Rain and A-ha’s Take on Me for the title, as well as the most streamed Classic Rock song of all time. 

It follows the box office success of the Freddie Mercury film which has also become the highest grossing music biopic in history just five weeks since being released.

Lead actor Rami Malek also scored a Golden Globe nomination last week in the Best Performance By An Actor In A Motion Picture - Drama category for his portrayal of Mercury. 

“So the River of Rock Music has metamorphosed into streams," Queen guitarist Brian May said of the news.

"Very happy that our music is still flowing to the max!"

Following its release on 31 October 1975, Bohemian Rhapsody gave Queen their first top ten hit in the US and stayed at #1 in the UK for nine consecutive weeks - a record at the time. 

The official clip, based on the Queen II album cover, is generally recognised as the first promotional music video. It was shot in just three hours at the group's rehearsal space for £3,500 (just over $AU6,000) at the time.
