Qantas Credit Union Arena Roof Collapses

21 March 2016 | 5:30 pm | Staff Writer

Workers lucky to not be injured.

The roof of Sydney's now-closed Qantas Credit Union Arena collapsed during demolition works over the weekend, nearly fatally injuring a worker.

According to Fairfax, the roof of the arena, formerly known as Sydney Entertainment Centre, crashed onto a worker who was underneath the structure and only avoided any serious injury as he was operating excavation machinery.

CFMEU NSW Secretary Brian Parker has claimed that worker safety is being ignored and that if the collapse had occurred on a weekday, up to 65 workers could have been involved in the incident.

"It's only a matter of time until we lose another construction worker in yet another avoidable workplace incident like this," he said.
