Polish Club Return With New Song, Live Show & Sound

It’s been a big year or so for Sydney rock duo Polish Club. They both got married. They dropped their major label. One member went through open-heart surgery. And now they’ve dropped their first single as an independent band: Manila. 

A happy and dreamy bop, it’s a bit of a different sound to what Polish Club usually releases, marking their entrance into their independent era. The relentless energy of the duo is still palpable, though, with synth and guitars overlapping in excitement. Co-written by Robby De Sa and tracked, mixed, and mastered by Simon Berckelman, Manila captures the emotions of the listener.

On top of that, though, Polish Club are also gearing up to play their first live show with no label or management in Sydney. Their one-off show at the Sydney Spiegeltent, scheduled for Thursday May 23, boasts a stellar lineup: set to grace the stage alongside them are Canberran indie-pop act Sesame Girl, plus Eora/Sydney’s own Jet City Sports Club and Rat Public.

The concert is a daunting feat for the band, vocalist and guitarist David Novak said in a statement: “We’ve never released a single completely by ourselves, let alone a big live show, so we really feel like we’re almost a new band just starting off fresh.”

But, unlike a brand new band, Polish Club already has a cult following. Their 2023 track Good Time was a hit, getting picked up by the Nine network for their coverage of the NRL season. 

The band is also popular for their honest lyrics, stirring up trouble with the release of their political double A-side On Vacation/Bad Vibrations.
