'Abby Doesn’t Work For Tips' is a chaotic, in-your-face anthem that paints a gloriously bizarre portrait of an Australian waitress.

We asked Noah Skape a few questions about Abby Doesn’t Work For Tips…

Tell us about the track - does Abby the waitress actually exist? Who or what was your inspiration?

Like a lot of creatives in Australia, I've worked a day job in many cafes and have seen the real gross side of entitled customers. It can get tough out there for front-of-house staff who are just trying to pay their rent with dignity. Abby is every server who's had a customer make them cry for ridiculously petty reasons.

What was it like to work with Jay Whalley?

Jay is a bona fide Australian icon and when I wrote his verse, it was his voice that I heard singing it. I think I was doing my own poor impression of him while we were playing Abby live before I realised the only way to get it right was to have him on the track. After I described his verse as being the customers's voices circling through Abby's head, he came back to me with the gold chaos that you hear.

What does your creative process look like when creating something such as ADWFT?

Sometimes, a full song will emerge like a picture in your mind, then it's up to you to quickly sketch it out before spending ages shading and colouring and moving things around - I love that part. Abby basically happened like that. It's not the first time I've used orchestral strings (played by Bowen Gosper) in an arrangement, but it is the first time I've featured them as such a prominent colour. And it won't be the last!

How would you introduce yourself to someone discovering Noah Skape?

I'm a queerdo-punk actor trying to write show tunes, equally inspired by Sondheim as I am by The Ramones. I have a f**king killer band of really talented and dedicated musicians who are intent on sweating. More releases to come this year, culminating in an EP; keep an eye out at noahskape.com.
