Sydney-based singer-songwriter Nick Ward has composed his first-ever feature film score.
The film Jimpa was directed by South Australian director Sophie Hyde. It stars Olivia Colman (The Favourite, The Crown) as Hannah and Aud Mason-Hyde, who plays Hannah’s non-binary teen Frances. The two travel to Amsterdam to be with John Lithgow (Killers Of The Flower Moon, Dexter), who portrays Frances’ beloved gay grandfather, Jim-pa.
According to the film synopsis, Frances wants to stay with Jim during their last year of school. Hannah must “reconsider her beliefs about parenting” and “confront old stories about her relationship with her father.”
Yesterday (12 December), the line-up for next year’s Sundance Film Festival was revealed, and news dropped that Jimpa would have its premiere at the prestigious event. The 2025 Sundance Film Festival will take place from 23 January to 2 February.
Ward shared his involvement in the film yesterday, writing on Instagram: “my first feature film score for JIMPA dir. by @sophhyde starring olivia colman + @jalithgow is premiering at #SUNDANCE film festival next month what tha hell.”
The news of Ward composing the score for Jimpa follows the release of his debut album, House With The Blue Door, which saw him embark on an East Coast headline tour in October. He also landed a support slot opening for Troye Sivan on his Something To Give Each Other Australian tour.
On Saturday, 21 December, Ward will open for Royel Otis on their homecoming show at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion. He’ll then end the year with performances at Beyond The Valley and Lost Paradise festivals.
Nick Ward will perform at Wollongong’s Yours & Owls festival alongside headliners Denzel Curry, Fontaines D.C., The Kooks, and Goo Goo Dolls in March. In May, he’ll head to the UK for the music festival and showcase event, The Great Escape.
