New Orleans Blues Icon Dr John Has Passed Away

The New Orleans blues and funk icon, Dr John, has died aged 77.

The family has released a statement via social media confirming Dr John, aka Macolm Rebennack, died “towards the break of day” of a heart attack. 

 No further details of his death were provided. 

“The family thanks all whom have shared his unique musical journey, and requests privacy at this time,” it reads.

According to AP News, Rebennack had reportedly not been seen in public much since late 2017, when he cancelled several gigs.

Dr John was a six-time Grammy winner and a Hall of Fame inductee. He recorded with artists such as The Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, Sonny & Cher, Frank Zappa and more. Rebennack also appeared in Martin Scorsese’s The Last Waltz.
