A new docuseries examining the key female players who helped shape the hip-hop scene is coming to Netflix.

Titled Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop, the series is set to feature an impressive lineup of influential figures from the genre's past, such as Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, MC Sha-Rock, Rah Digga, Roxanne Shanté, Monie Love, Yo-Yo, Remy Ma, Da Brat, and others as they reflect on the history and enduring legacy of the genre.

The series also includes insights from rising stars and current chart-toppers like Kash Doll, Latto, Coi Leray, Latto, Tierra Whack, Rapsody, Chika, Saweetie, and more, who provide their own valuable perspectives from the contemporary music landscape.

The streaming platform officially released the trailer for the series on Wednesday (July 26), and provides a captivating glimpse into the evolution of the hip-hop genre, highlighting its embrace of women artists while paying homage to the trailblazing stars who paved the way for the current era of female dominance on the charts.

“By giving flowers to originators like Sha-Rock and Roxanne Shante or hearing real talk from contemporary superstars like Saweetie and Coi Leray, Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop contextualises the history of the music that changed the world within the wider social, racial, and political landscape of the times and, crucially, through a female lens,” the series’ official summary reads.

“We have been through a lot,” Queen Latifah says in the clip. “We have stood back up, and we’ll always keep standing back up.”
