What can we say? We called it back in September, when we reported on the five things we learned from the Molly trailer. It's right there, third paragraph down, in black and white.
"The soundtrack’s gotta be good".
And boy, were we right.
The soundtrack to the Channel 7 mini-series based on the iconic music industry figure, Ian "Molly" Meldrum, has just been released, aptly titled, Do Yourself A Favour. It's packed with three CDs — two of which are filled with songs that hail from the series, and one with 20 cheesy but amazing pop gems picked by Meldrum himself — it's almost like the man is slaving away with a cassette recorded to make you your own mixtape.
Meldrums says of the soundtrack, "If just one title sums up the era … it would have to be [Skyhooks’] Party To End All Parties – we had so much fun, and it was a great time for Australian music.
"It’s a surreal experience watching your life on screen. For me, it only really makes sense when I listen to the music, the songs that are on this soundtrack," says Meldrum.
So treat yourself to the classics you rarely hear on the airwaves anymore, boogie to the sounds of The Ferrets, Suzi Quatro, Chisel and Split Enz, and lend disc three's iconic tracklist of mega-hits (think Culture Club, Wham!, Men At Work and Pet Shop Boys) to someone looking for the perfect '80s party playlist.
It's time to retire those Donna Summer, Bee Gees and Daryl Braithwaite tunes on your Ripper '76 CD and check out the full tracklist below.
