Student volunteers who aided the cleanup after New Zealand's recent earthquake disaster have been rewarded with tickets to see Metallica.
Two weeks ago the 7.1 magnitude quake struck about 40 kilometres west of Christchurch, causing widespread damage and power outages. Metallica has two sold-out concerts at CBS Canterbury Arena next week but in wake of the devastating earthquake on September 4 the band and promoter Michael Coppel wanted to aid in the region's recovery.
The promoters have donated about 300 suite tickets for the student volunteers and emergency services to attend the concert. Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker said it was a generous offer which would send a great message to the hundreds of people who had worked thousands of hours getting the city back up and running.
