It’s been an exciting 12 hours for Metallica fans, as Live Nation and the band themselves have finally teased their long-awaited return to Australia in 2025.

Last night (19 September), Metallica announced the addition of a North American run to their ongoing 72 Seasons run. Just minutes before they shared the new dates, Live Nation Australia took to social media and dropped a teaser for Australian fans.

The concert promoters posted an image of the band and a link to the waiting list to find out when Metallica is coming to Australia. The post is captioned: “Sign up to be the first to know,” with the eyeballs looking sideways emoji, a guitar, and the horns.

On Metallica’s website, the band posted an update about the new tour dates, and at the very bottom of the announcement reads a message for the band’s dedicated fans in Australia and New Zealand.

The heavy metal icons have promised they haven’t forgotten their fans down under and are planning a tour in 2025. Plus, we won’t have to wait much longer for news. The announcement reads:

Finally, North America is not our only stop in 2025, as this year, we will return to Australia and New Zealand after far too long away!!! Stay tuned for the full announcement coming VERY soon.

Metallica’s 2025 North American dates span from April to late June. The band will once again play their “No Repeat Weekend” setlists, which involve playing for two nights in a city and featuring a completely unique setlist each night.

Judging by those dates already booked and the size of the venues Metallica would need to book in Australia, we’d say it’s likely to see tour dates that arrive after the AFL and NRL seasons; think October to December 2025.

The Music has reached out to Live Nation for comment.

It’s been a long 11 years since Metallica touched down on our shores, with the band last performing in Australia to headline Soundwave Festival in 2013. They’ve since released two studio albums: 2016’s Hardwired… To Self-Destruct and last year’s 72 Seasons.

Metallica were booked to perform in Australia in 2019, but the tour was cancelled as singer James Hetfield needed to enter a treatment program to work on his recovery from addiction. The band were due to be joined by Slipknot.

Slipknot will return to Australia in March 2025 to headline their titular festival, Knotfest.
