In support of their forthcoming eighth studio album due for release this Sepptember, US neo-psychedelic outfit Mercury Rev have announced new dates on top of their upcoming Aussie tour

Kicking off their first national tour since 2002 at the newly-announced Fairgrounds Festival in Berry on 5 December, the New York-founded duo will move on to play a headline show at Sydney's Oxford Art Factory on Monday 7 December, as well as their already announced dates in Melbourne and Brisbane.

Joining them as the support act for the Sydney and Melbourne shows is Aussie producer DJ James Dela Cruz of Melbourne electro group The Avalanches, while home town duo Primitive Motion will open for the Brisbane show.

Meanwhile, in anticipation of Mercury Rev's new album, The Light In You, group co-founder Jonathn Donahue explained the reason for the decision to make a new album following a seven year absence since 2008's Snowflake Midnight.

"It was one of those otherworldly life sequences, when everything you think is solid turns molten," Donahue said.

"But also, when something is worth saying, it can take a long time to say it, rather than just blurt it out."

The first single from the record, Are You Ready? has recently dropped in the lead up to the album release on 18 September — check it out below.
