After nearly two decades, Melbourne's iconic Cherry Bar has announced it will move on from the famous AC/DC Lane.
In a statement issued today, co-owner and booker James Young confirmed the decision has been made to secure the rock institution's "long-term future".
"It is my intention to take the name, the staff and the sticky carpet to a new Melbourne address with a long lease and a safe and secure future for live local music and late night rock n roll revelry," the statement reads.
"Presently we are in serious negotiation with ten (yes, count them ten!) venues across Melbourne as we strive to find the exact 'right place' to move Cherry to. So, watch this space and never lose faith.
"Cherry Bar will never die."
Young confirmed that the AC/DC Lane space will be taken over by new operators "who will be doing something very different". It comes after Herald Sun reported late last year that the venue's lease had been purchased by Nick and Daniel Russian; owners of the famous Eve nightclub.
The post concludes, "Cherry has not been sold. Cherry is moving so that it can survive long term and continue to host, support and love the best music in the world, local live music!"
