Melb Musos To Stage Busking Protest Against Radio National Funding Cuts

"Please reconsider their decision to axe these programs, our livelihood as musicians depends on these shows."

Following news two weeks ago that ABC are set to axe funding to all but one of Radio National's music programming in 2017, musicians and Radio National listeners in Melbourne are staging a protest outside ABC Studios Southbank this weekend.

A group of musicians — led by Gallie — will be showing ABC the very importance of local music by busking in protest outside the studios. Other high-profile musos set to join Gallie include Deborah Conway, Willy Zygier, Nick Barker, Rebecca Barnard, Shane O’Mara, The Dusty Millers and Charles Jenkins.

Other people who have backed the campaign and condemned the cuts include Katie Noonan, Ruth Hazleton, Glen Hansard and author Tim Winton.

“Without independent art and music we lose our identity, and shows like 'The Inside Sleeve', ‘The Daily Planet’, ‘The Live Set’ and ‘Rhythm Divine’ are our lifeline to the Australian people, not only in the major cities, but more [sic] probably more importantly, to listeners in regional Australia," says Gallie.

"We need these shows for our careers, our community, our families and Australian Culture, because these shows play and support independent adult contemporary music.

“All the artists and listeners involved in the protest are asking Radio National management to please reconsider their decision to axe these programs, our livelihood as musicians depends on these shows," Gallie implores.

The protest will be staged at midday on Saturday, 3 December outside ABC Studios Southbank. If you'd like to sign their Change.org petition head here, and head here for more information on the protest.
