Bristol trip-hop pioneers Massive Attack have confirmed their long-awaited return to Australia, today announcing their first shows in the country in 16 years.

The tour announcement arrives just weeks after the duo – Robert 3DDel Naja, Grant Daddy GMarshall – released their first new music in six years: the incensed Boots on the Ground featuring Tom Waits.

This week, the band will headline Primavera Sound Porto, following their first show in five years in Helsinki last week. Recognised for their activism around the No Music for Genocide campaign, climate issues, streaming, and AI, as well as their music, Massive Attack is one of the biggest names to rise from the trip-hop label.

After 16 long years, Massive Attack will bring their incredible discography to Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne this August.

The tour begins at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on Thursday, 6 August, continues at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena on Sunday, 9 August, and concludes at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena on Tuesday, 11 August.

Frontier Members can access pre-sale tickets from Thursday, 4 June, at 2 pm local time, followed by the general sale on Friday, 5 June, at 3 pm local time. You can find more ticketing information on the Frontier Touring website.

Massive Attack’s last studio album, Heligoland, was released in 2010. It peaked at #8 in Australia and went Gold in the UK. In 2016, they released the Ritual Spirit EP, and in 2020, they shared the Eutopia EP.

In 2024, Massive Attack teamed up with Young Fathers and Fontaines D.C. and released the limited-edition vinyl EP, Ceasefire. The EP is a collection of songs that support Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in its emergency operations in Gaza and the West Bank.

In April, the group teamed up with Tom Waits for Boots on the Ground for their first taste of new music since 2020’s Eutopia EP. Massive Attack said of the collaboration:

It’s a career honour to collaborate with an artist of the magnitude, originality and integrity of Tom, but this track is arriving in an atmosphere of chaos.

Across the western hemisphere, state authoritarianism and the militarisation of police forces are fusing again with neo-fascist politics. Seen within the American emergency, at home and overseas, this track contains pulses of callous impulse & abandoned mind.
