The Tassie punk team reinvigorate one of the nation's best-loved singer-songwriters for triple j's weekly breakfast gimmick
We're generally not in the habit these days of joining the frankly masturbatory wave of Like A Version stories, where each new performance is definitely the best one you've ever heard, that proliferates online every Friday.
It's truly not an elitism thing; we just figure most of you probably have a radio, and if you care about it, then you'd have likely already heard it, or heard about it, by the time this stuff goes up on YouTube. (And, besides, it's not like they really need the attention.)
That said, we just couldn't possibly bring ourselves to look past Luca Brasi's simply stellar showing from this morning's Breakfast With Matt & Alex show, where the beloved southern outfit brought forth a beautifully crafted, wholly respectful rendition of an iconic track by an iconic perfomer — Paul Kelly's How To Make Gravy.
As you can see in the clip, the Tassie punks don't stray too far from the path first walked by Mr Kelly, keeping the song at a casual pace and kissed by atmospheric, wandering guitar, before loosening just enough to let their own emotive, powerful colours shine when the soundscape opens out and picks up at about the three-minute mark. It's a transition that takes place in the original, too, and it's no less genuinely expressive in the hands of one of the nation's best contemporary acts than it was in its originator's.
