The lead singer of a South Korean K-pop boy band has passed away at the age of 27.

As ABC reports, Kim Jong-hyun died in hospital after he was found unconscious at a rented apartment in Cheongdam-dong on Monday.

Police arrived at the apartment following an emergency call made by Jong-hyun's sister, however he was later pronounced dead.

It has been reported that the singer died from inhaling toxic fumes, however police are yet to confirm this.

Jong-hyun joined Shinee, considered one of the best-ever K-pop groups, in 2008.

While the group released six Korean albums and five Japanese albums, Jong-hyun released his debut solo LP, She Is, in May 2016.

His second compilation and final work, Story Op 2, was released in April this year.

His last public appearance was at his solo concert on 10 December in Seoul.
