US metal band Lamb Of God frontman Randy Blythe has opened up in an interview about his time in prison in 2013.

The 44-year-old singer was charged with manslaughter for allegedly pushing a fan offstage at at a 2010 concert in the Czech Republic, that lead to the fan suffering a coma and subsequently, his death.

While Blyth was later found not guilty, he still spent five weeks behind bars and speaking to Rolling Stone, he revealed how his experience behind bars inspired the band's new song, 512, from their upcoming album.

"You undergo a radical mental and emotional shift when you go into prison," Blythe said.

"You have to be ready for violence at any time. Anyone who is 100 percent honest in prison will get taken advantage of, maybe by other prisoners, maybe by guards. For me, being in prison was a lot of figuring out what I could get away with, how I could work outside any set of rules in order to remain as comfortable as I could."

Blythe also revealed in the interview that during his incarceration, he was often placed in a dark basement so the guards could monitor him for depression.

"They stick you in the worst, dimmest, darkest place in the prison...I couldn't even see the sun to tell what part of the day it was. It was just steadily lessening levels of gloom."

Blythe would spend 23 hours a day in his cell and he said it began to take a mental toll on him quickly.

"One hour a day, I would go to this little area where we would walk and, on the way out, I could see this clock that was above the courtyard. I'd check the time as I walked in and out to make sure time was still moving. I had no watch, no nothing. It's a weird mental trip."

Moving forward, Lamb Of God will perform throughout June and July in Europe before returning back to the US to play shows with Slipknot

The band's eighth studio album, VII: Sturm Und Drang is due for release on Jul 24 — check the new song out below:
