Kesha Will Re-Record Hit 'TiK ToK' When She Has The 'Legal Rights To'

Upon celebrating the 15th anniversary of her hit single, TiK ToK, American singer-songwriter Kesha has revealed her plans to re-record the song when she has the “legal rights to.”

With the re-recorded version, Kesha hopes to include the opening lyric change about P-Diddy she uses while performing the song live (she credits Reneé Rapp for inspiration).

In November, Kesha showcased the first lyric change to the song following reports of several allegations of sexual assault towards P-Diddy. What began as “Wake up in the morning feeling like P. Diddy” became “Wake up in the morning feeling like just me.”

Earlier this year, Kesha joined Reneé Rapp on stage at Coachella and made a fiercer change, singing: “Wake up in the morning like, ‘Fuck P-Diddy.”

TiK ToK, Kesha’s debut single and first song released from her debut album, Animal – the song dropped in August 2009 ahead of the album’s release in 2010 – was a worldwide hit, dominating Singles Charts in Australia, the US, Canada, and Europe.

Reflecting on the song’s impact, Kesha took to X (formerly known as Twitter) this morning (8 August) and wrote alongside the single artwork and short video:

TiK ToK was the first single that I put into this world that had my voice AND my name credited!!!! I remember making it fun and happy because that’s how I felt and wanted others to feel. What I’m so proud of is that’s how this song STILL makes me feel, through it all, and those are emotions I want all of us to connect to.

Fifteen years after its release, Kesha views the song as a “snapshot” of how she saw the world at the time. “That girl was naive and wild and playful,” she wrote. “This song eternalizes [sic] a side of myself that I love very much, and now see I have to protect fiercely. The world has changed so much and so have I.”

Adding that she “absolutely” loved the lyric change, shouting out Reneé Rapp, Kesha revealed that said change is “permanent”.

She added, “I will re-record it when I have legal rights to. Now, my first baby stands for so much. It stands for fiercely protecting my fun and unadulterated joy, in myself and in others. The whole ride has been absolute insanity, but the JOY is still riding.

“I hope you all can find 3 1/2 minutes of play in this song and connect with your wild child-like joy.”

Kesha celebrated parting ways with her former management and record label in December, going independent. She released her fifth album, Gag Order, in May last year.
