Julian Lennon has revealed that he recently underwent emergency surgery after his dermatologist discovered cancer on his skin.

Taking to Instagram this week, Julian – the elder son of The BeatlesJohn Lennon – encouraged fans to get their skin checked after he was diagnosed with melanoma for a second time.

Detailing the lead-up to his diagnosis, Lennon revealed that he was set to fly to New York from Los Angeles for Good Morning America, Sirius XM, iHeartRadio, and a book signing event for his latest book, Life’s Fragile Moments.

While in LA, he had a routine checkup with his dermatologist, Dr Tess Mauricio, who caught and operated on melanoma on his skin “a few years ago, and literally saved [his] life.”

After finishing up with Good Morning America, Lennon received a message from Dr Tess, with “some urgency” to return to Los Angeles as she had found two concerning locations on his skin – shoulder and forearm – one of which was melanoma and needed to be operated on ASAP.

“Instead of going home to put my Christmas tree up and happily finish the year off, relaxing at home, I flew directly back to Los Angeles after all my work in New York was done, and went directly from LAX airport to surgery,” Lennon continued.

Dr Tess recommended he see Dr Tim Neavin, a surgeon who “spent several hours cleaning up and operating on me, with large margins, in the hope that we have, at the end of the day - clear margins, which would mean being free from cancer…”

Adding that the operation was a “success,” Lennon noted that he hasn’t yet received the results from the biopsy, which he may not get before Christmas.

“I’m very thankful to Dr Tess and Dr Tim for being able to coordinate this surgery at such short notice, but for once again, hopefully Saving My Life,” Lennon wrote. “One can never be too confident in circumstances like this, but we all believe that Dr Tim has saved the day… So, fingers crossed for now.”

He concluded that good news “would be the best Christmas ever” and reminded his followers of the importance of getting their skin checked.

“This is also a timely reminder to all to please get yourself checked out by your doctor,” he wrote. “It only takes a short while to do so, and you may just be saving your own life at the end of the day… so please, for the sake of yourself, your family, and [your] friends, just go to your Dr and do what must be done… I love life, and I want to live for a very long time, and this is one way, and a choice, that could determine your future…

“I wish you all happy holidaze and a healthy long life… Love to all.”

In 2020, Lennon shared that his cancer scare left him “shaking inside.”
