Jason Mewes Exits Kevin Smith After Rubber 'Freak Out'

29 November 2014 | 12:48 pm | Daniel Cribb

"When they put the prosthetics on, he freaked out and tore them off."

Originally cast to play the antagonist in Kevin Smith’s upcoming comedy horror flick Yoga Hosers, Jason Mewes had to withdraw from the production due to issues with claustrophobia.

The second film in the True North trilogy and follow-up to this year’s Tusk, Yoga Hosers features Johnny Depp and his daughter, Lily-Rose, and Smith's daughter, Harley Quinn.

Much like Tusk, which features star Justin Long in a grotesque full-body plastic walrus costume, Mewes was set to be covered in rubber prosthetics, but “freaked” when trying them on, according to Smith.

“Originally it was going to be Jason Mewes playing all the little rubber villains, but he couldn't wear the rubber. When they put the prosthetics on, he freaked out and tore them off, so after a couple of hours it was kind of clear that he wasn't going to be able to do it,” Smith told theMusic.com.au.

“He's got claustrophobia issues and whatnot, because when he was a kid, his mum would go to the heroin house and lock him in a closet while she'd go off and dose, so he has real claustrophobia issues.

“I was all, ‘Alright, I'll do it!", so there's rubber in that movie, and I'm buried in it; it looks fucked up. I look so weird in it, it looks so funny.”

Unfortunately for Mewes fans, it means he won’t be appearing in the film at all.

“He's not going to be in front of the camera, there were no roles left; everything was taken.”

On the plus side, Mewes and Smith are set to bring their Jay & Silent Bob Get Old show back to Australia next year, so you will get a chance to see him then.

Tusk will be released on DVD on 19 Feb, and Smith is currently working on Yoga Hosers and Clerks III.
