After 23 feature films, 14 Ian Fleming novels and a crazy amount of video games, the James Bond franchise is going in a direction it has never gone before — to the Broadway stage.
According to Playbill, Placeholder Productions have secured the rights to the franchise and are planning an original musical show.
The theatre production is to be based on Fleming's version of the famous British spy, which he brought to life between 1953-1966 in a series of books.
Placeholder's executive producer Merry Saltzman, who is also the daughter of iconic Bond film producer Harry Saltzman said that the show, concisely titled James Bond: The Musical, will feature "several Bond villains, plus some new ones."
While casting is yet to commence, Saltzman confirmed that they hope to open the show within three years.
"Production schedules and trial runs are still being worked out in anticipation of a late 2017-early 2018 opening," Saltzman said, adding that the musical will include "our own Bond girl."
Meanwhile, the 24th Bond film Spectre is set for release in November this year — it will mark Daniel Craig's fourth film as the 007 agent, while acclaimed actor Christoph Waltz will feature as the latest villain.
