Will Instagram's @Music Succeed Where Twitter's #Music Failed?

New program called @music

Online mobile photo sharing app Instagram has just announced a brand new channel to engage users in the music community.

The aptly named @music was launched by the company just one year after fellow app competitor Twitter last year closed their own similar experiment, #music

The app attempted to engage artists and fans as a way to discover new music, however it failed to do so and was toppled by competitors such as Spotify and Rdio.

The Twitter experiment was cancelled in March.

Meanwhile, the new Instagram program was launched with a statement released as the first post of the music channel.

"The music community is –– and always has been –– an important part of Instagram" the statement read.

"...Today we’re launching @music, a new account dedicated to exploring music around the globe, from those who create it to the community around it...It means highlighting music photographers, album illustrators, instrument makers and, of course, fans."

The first two accounts to be launched today include popular musician and The Roots drummer Questlove, as well as a band member from Japanese rock band Tricot — both created to share a different side to well known acts, as well as to give exposure to lesser known artists.
