The use of ID scanners have been praised by police after the tool has been credited for cutting theft by 70 percent in Kings Cross bars and nightclubs.
As 9news reports, police believe the high tech measures, which require patrons to have their photo identification taken upon entering a venue, are helping to track down and arrest offenders more efficiently and can give them advantages while investigating late night incidents.
Speaking on the impact of ID scanners which were introduced into the Sydney district last June, Kings Cross commander Superintendent Michael Fitzgerald said: "Within an hour, we (can be) executing search warrants and putting them before courts."
The news comes in the wake of a number of Kings Cross venues being forced to close their doors, after struggling to combat Sydney's lockout laws.
Most recently, owner of the now closed popular nightspot Hugos Lounge, Dave Evans, stated his intent to launch a class action legal against the New South Wales Government after he and his staff were left jobless following the closure of his establishment last week.
