In what will be the first time in 26 years, iconic hip-hop group NWA are set to reunite this month for a live performance.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, rapper Ice Cube announced that he along with MC Ren and DJ Yella, will take to the stage at the BET Experience event at the Staples Center on Jun 27 to perform a number of the seminal outfit's songs.

Declining to reveal what tracks they would perform on the night Ice Cube said: "It's just gonna be a great night...It's just gonna be one of those 'I wish I were there in L.A. nights.' And we're gonna rock that shit, no problem."

He also remained tight-lipped when asked if fellow member Dr Dre would join the rest of the original lineup on stage: "You know, if you wish upon a star, you never know [laughs]. You never know."

"It's like, I hope he blesses us with his presence. But if not, I've been rockin' for a long time without anybody. So whoever shows up, I'm still gonna rock. Whoever don't show up, we still gonna rock."

Ice Cube revealed that the group have been "dibbling and dabbling" with work on new music in support of the upcoming biopic film about NWA, Straight Outta Compton, which he also co-produced.

"It's all about how great it comes out when you're creating something. We can throw anything together; we can put rhymes and beats together easy," he said.

"But our expectation level is so high, and if we meet our threshold, the world gets to hear what it is. If we don't, we still need more time together to make it happen. It's really some TLC, tender love and care, being put into these records. We'll see what it is."

Straight Outta Compton stars US actor Paul Giamatti and Ice Cube's son, O'Shea Jackson Jr, who will portray his father in the film.

The movie hits Aussie cinemas on Aug 27 — check out the trailer below.
