Much-loved Brisbane-based independent/alternative comic-book store Junky Comics is at risk of having to shut down this year unless fundraising efforts prove successful, the shop's owner says.

Opened almost two years ago in West End, Junky is the love and labour of Vlada Edirippulige — probably better known to our wider demographic as the talented bassist of Brissy legends Major Leagues — and has blossomed into a hub of vibrant alt/DIY creativity over the span of its short life.

In that time, it has grown to host not only its namesake comics but a range of indie zines as well as art exhibitions, in-store gigs, workshops, launch events and more.

However, as Edirippulige explains in her Facebook event post, "As much as it sucks, I realized early this year that things were a little dire financially and was hit with the realization that this very well could be the year that I might have to shut Junky’s doors".

"I really really don’t want this to happen," she said. "I wanna stick around for a little while longer and keep putting on fun events and hanging out with all of you lovely folk and reading your gorgeous comics and books and putting on exhibitions and stocking local work!"

To that end, in collaboration with Cat Outridge Field of Betty's Espresso in South Brisbane, Junky Comics is throwing a "Help Keep Junky Comics Open" fundraiser at the cafe on Sunday 19 February from 12-8pm.

Sponsored by Young Henry's, the event will feature a raffle ("The prizes will be really good," Edirippulige reassures) as well as products for sale to coax you into parting with your hard-earned cash for a good cause.

If you don't live in Brisbane or are otherwise unable to get to West End, did you know that we live in the age of the internet and you can buy your comics online? Junky has a very pleasant online store, so you could always lend a hand that way, if you're so inclined.

Edirippulige has also launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for the store, through which you can donate to the cause.

See more information about the fundraiser at Betty's on Facebook, or check out the range at Junky's website.
