More Gordi More Gordi

Much-loved local musicians Gordi and Alex Lahey are heading to the SAE Melbourne Campus this coming Monday to share their insights into the music industry and their songwriting processes.

The event, which kicks off at 5.30pm, is free to attend (register below) and will also include a performance from the two ARIA Award nominees.

Ahead of the Industry Insights session, Gordi has told The Music about her songwriting tips and more. Check them out below.

Who is a songwriter you admire and what draws you to them?

Sufjan Stevens - he manages to create an entire world for the listener to live in. He creates images with words as much as music. He is incredibly versatile in his songwriting - he can be elaborate or simple, beautiful or abrasive.

What’s one tip you have for making a collaboration with another songwriter work?

Let go. Lean into and welcome the other collaborator's process. If you guard your own process too fiercely and don't allow room for another you will miss a valuable opportunity to grow in your craft.

What’s the best environment for the songwriting process?

One where you are both comfortable and challenged. I definitely find that being in the same physical space can feel a bit stale sometimes - it's great to change things up and be in a space that draws the best out of you. Though quite often it's more about the mental environment than the physical one.

SAE's Industry Insights event with Gordi and Alex Lahey takes place this coming Monday 19 April from 5.30-7.30pm at the SAE Melbourne Campus.
