"Sticking your necks in something you think you understand, but clearly don't. Bye.”
Social media has been flooded with US election commentary over the past 48 hours, and among those commentators are Aussie electro duo Flight Facilities who have come under fire following a lengthy post on their Facebook earlier today.
Describing the election as one of the "greatest reality checks of our time", Flight Facilities said those causing a fuss should “stop, look around, and look inward” at how the “cultural divide” occurred.
“Sometimes things don’t go the way we want them to. That’s life,” the band’s Facebook statement read.
“But if we live by the mentality of turning to violence and intimidation when things don’t go our way, why should we expect our adversaries to take the higher ground when it does?”

The duo goes on to attribute the Donald Trump presidential outcome to people living in their “own perfect little bubbles”.
“To generalise about the complexities in the majority of a voting nation, is no better than the act of racism itself.
“America should be proud to have made a huge step in electing an African-American President, twice. The Republican party won the 2016 election with less of the white vote, than when it lost in 2012, which hopefully suggests that this week’s truly unbelievable result is less about hate, and more about the resonance of something more we failed to see.”
Within hours of posting their views to social media, users – including long-time fans – have begun to lash out, many claiming the band were coming from a place of privilege.
“Why would you risk your brand with this uninformed and incredibly privileged take,” one Facebook user commented.
“Millions will be affected by the promised policies of a Trump presidency. Make room for the voices of the disenfranchised and spare us the assurances that well-to-do white men will be ok. We know.”
“Interesting PR move, guys,” someone else said. “Sticking your necks in something you think you understand, but clearly don't. Bye.”
Despite the backlash and some long-term fans bidding the band farewell, others have commended Flight Facilities for the post.
“This commentary is brilliant. People need to engage themselves in the entire dialogue before spitting fire,” a fan commented.
“Thanks, Flight Facilities, it's big of you to take an unpopular opinion, even if it is the one we need to hear,” said another. “This generation has been living inside and echo chamber, and now that reality has shattered their world-view, this is their response.”
