The mysterious, Harrison Ford-loving Minneapolis quintet Farewell Continental are finally ready to reveal themselves on their debut full-length album ¡Hey, Hey Pioneers!. Available May 10, 2011 on Paper + Plastick Records, ¡Hey, Hey Pioneers! will be available digitally and on 12” vinyl in varying colors (which includes download card), as well as CD.
¡Hey, Hey Pioneers! finds Farewell Continental expanding on their shoegaze, 90’s-styled indie rock first introduced to listeners on their two previous EPs for Paper + Plastick. Due to the band’s busy schedule and other commitments, Farewell Continental recorded the album in three separate sessions with producer Ed Ackerson (Polara, Golden Smog, Jayhawks) at Flowers Studio in Uptown Minneapolis, MN. The band’s ever changing musical taste is reflected in the album, which varies from jangly tunes to downtempo shoegaze tracks, and power-pop songs to straightforward rockers. “I guess we just write songs and don't think too hard about it,” says guitarist Rick Deckard. “We let the songs be what they wanna be. We don't want this stuff to be too contrived or plan too much. If a batch of songs comes out poppy, then they come out poppy. If a batch of songs comes out really ambient and droney, that's cool, too. We'll let the songs kinda write themselves but then decorate them with pedals and other bells and whistles. The next record could be a feedback addled drone fest, or an electronic record, for all I know.” Never adhering to a standard formula for their songs, Kimble adds to the enigma that is Farewell Continental and comments, “A lot of the lyrics to the songs we write are based more on the sounds that they make and the images they invoke, rather than the meanings they have.”
As Farewell Continental is set to embark on their first journey across the US, band is willing to reveal one bit of information that has been speculated by fans for years: Farewell Continental does in fact include Thomas Rehbein and Josh Mckay from Small Towns Burn A Little Slower and Justin Pierre from Motion City Soundtrack.
