While reports have suggested that the body of David Bowie has secretly been cremated in recent days and that no funeral ever took place, the late singer's family have announced that they are currently arranging a private ceremony in honour of the rock icon.

The family confirmed the news in a statement posted to Bowie's official Facebook page, though they did not address the recent speculation.

"The family of David Bowie is currently making arrangements for a private ceremony celebrating the memory of their beloved husband, father and friend," the statement reads.

"They ask once again that their privacy be respected at this most sensitive of times."

The statement also made clear that any tribute or memorial concerts taking place in the coming months, which would include an already sold-out show at New York's Carnegie Hall on 31 March have not been organised by his family.

"Just as each and every one of us found something unique in David's music, we welcome everyone’s celebration of his life as they see fit," the statement concludes.

Bowie tragically died earlier this week at the age of 69, following an 18-month battle with cancer and just two days after the release of his 25th and final studio album, Blackstar.
