By this time next week, we're sure The Steve McQueens will have gained a whole slew of new Aussie fans following their BIGSOUND showcase.
Today, the band have shared an exclusive behind the scenes look at the recording of their latest album, Tape, which was recorded in the band's home country, Singapore.
Check out the video and studio diary below, and catch The Steve McQueens at BIGSOUND during the Hear65 showcase at Ric's Big Backyard on Wednesday 5 Sep.
Hello people of Australia, especially all you who will be attending BIGSOUND!
We’re on the way to Japan right now, where we’re doing nine shows ending up with the Tokyo Jazz Festival! It’s gonna be hectic but we’re super psyched to be able to debut our new music internationally and work the material for our upcoming album recording, Tape; also… SO MUCH SUSHI!
We put this studio diary video together for you all so you can have a look at how we do things as The Steve McQueens.
With our last album, TERRARIUM, we’d try to spend as much time as possible rehearsing and playing the material before we’d head into the studio. That’s when we make changes to arrangements, play them over and over again. Sometimes these changes happen while we’re in the midst of recording too, so it’s also a lot about making decisions about a particular musical aesthetic or quirk that seems fitting in the moment. We’d split the sessions up, trying to record three-four tunes each time we hit the studio.
For TERRARIUM, we worked very closely with Mandrick for production and Joshua did most of the producing for the record.
Tape will be our fourth studio album and we’re evolving (help mom! Steve is evolving!) our sound as we grow as musicians, which means more honesty and more obsession to critical detail… Why ‘Tape’? It’s sticky, it repairs cracks, and analogue tape has also been known to record important events; so what’s not to like?
We are totally psyched to play at BIGSOUND right after the hectic Japan bit and to also get a chance to meet cool people and check out rad bands. The countdown begins now!
See you soon Australia,
The Steve McQueens
