EXCLUSIVE: Hellions' Top Five Songs That Reinvented The World

After posting a very heartfelt and inspiring message to their Facebook last week entitled "Reinvent The World", Sydney hardcore-punk outfit Hellions have decided to take it one step further and share their top five songs that they believe truly reinvented the world.

Electric Light Orchestra — When I Was a Boy

When I Was a Boy discusses a time before the writer was encumbered by the perceived necessity of pursuing money or any of adulthoods other responsibilities. The chorus demands a swoon and sway that’ll soothe you in your very marrow and make you want to shed the shell of callouses you’ve spent the entirety of your adult life solidifying. This song reconnects me with the innocence of youth, to a time when the reprehensible evils of the world were inconceivable. You can begin again.

john lennon — imagine

Imagine is a song that is historically recognised for its contribution to reinventing the world. The song implores the listener to fathom a world without the divisions of nationality and religion and to relinquish our sense of attachment to material possessions. This song has granted us fortitude through many horrors, subsequent to and including the death of Lennon himself. This is an exemplary ballad and arguably the world’s most popular paean of world peace.

michael jackson — man in the mirror

This one elucidates the power and necessity of conscious change made from within, how this in itself is a wonderful contribution to the world and a better place to start than any other. If the direct sincerity of the song’s lyrics driven by the alternating melancholic and invigorating tone of Michael’s voice weren’t enough, then you need look no further than the music video for a visual representation of his words.

eric clapton — change the world

Here, we have an old fashioned love song, featuring a falsetto hook that sounds the way that falling in love feels. To fall in love is the most sure-fire way to reinvent your own world and in turn, the world around you. It is not within your control, but rather in the winds of luck or fate - depending on how you look at it. You cannot plan to possess a love like Clapton croons about but you can be sure that this chorus will make you feel the same way with each listen.

don mclean — empty chairs

The incredible power of this melody never ceases to give me gooseflesh. This song is about loss of love. There are few things more life-altering than the low that accompanies unrequited love. Rejection forces you to assess yourself, your life and the meaning it holds, painful introspection will always hold a lesson if you are willing to learn.
