EXCLUSIVE: Adam Hills On 'Spicks & Specks' - "I Would Happily Do This Every Year"

"It's totally up to the ABC..."

This year, it's finally happened. After the best part of seven years off air, the original Spicks & Specks team got the band back together and filmed a long-awaited reunion special.

Premiering this Sunday night as part of ABC's Ausmusic Month celebrations, this special edition of the music quiz show will be, once again, hosted by comedian Adam Hills, who will be joined by team captains Myf Warhurst and Alan Brough.

Speaking with The Music this morning, Hills hinted that a somewhat regular Spicks & Specks return may not be that far-fetched.

"The interesting thing is going to be, this is the first time Spicks & Specks has ever been to air in a post-Twitter world. Twitter wasn’t a thing in 2011, so I’m expecting a bucketload of tweets saying, ‘Are you guys going to bring it back?’ and probably about the same amount of tweets going, ‘Why is Adam’s hair so grey?’" laughs Hills.

"But as far as the bringing it back, I mean, on the night, it was so much fun on the night. I said to Alan and Myf, ‘Look, I would happily do this every year for Ausmusic Month,’ maybe even for the whole month. You know, come back and we’d film four episodes and we’d just do a month of Spicks & Specks.

"But I mean, that was just me after the show on the high of doing it. Look, I think Alan and Myf were on a high from doing it as well, so they might have the same thinking as me.

"It’s totally up to the ABC but I can’t imagine we would ever go back to doing 40 episodes a year partly ‘cos of my workload over here in London, but it feels a bit disingenuous.

"You know, we said goodbye to people, we did a tour, we did a live tour. We played to, I don’t know, 30-odd-thousand people, saying goodbye. It would feel, I know bands do it all the time, but I just feel it would just be a bit disingenuous to come back seven years later and go, ‘Hey, we’re back!’ but maybe a short run. Maybe like a month, maybe a couple of specials a year, I don’t know. But I'd be more than happy to do something like that.

Spicks & Specks airs this Sunday, 4 November at 7.40pm on ABC and iview.
