Major Sydney Cinema Site Recommended To Be Shut Down To Make Way For Skyscraper

Central Sydney Planning Committee approved the proposal for recommendation this evening.

One of Sydney's most famous cinema sites could be closed down in favour of new developments.

As ABC reported today, it was proposed that a 150-metre tall skyscraper would be built on the George Street site that is currently home to Event Cinemas, which would include 507 residential apartments, a childcare facility and retail stores.

The retail premises would also include a boutique cinema.

The Music can now confirm that, following a meeting with Central Sydney Planning Committee this evening, the proposal has been recommended for approval by Council.

Event Cinemas George Street has hosted a number of major film premieres over the years, as well as screenings for Sydney Film Festival and the Queer Screen Film Festival.

Meanwhile big names including Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Quentin Tarantino, Jamie Lee Curtis, Matt Damon, Kevin Hart, Amy Poehler, Jessica Chastain, Renee Zellweger, Edgar Wright, Amy Schumer, Kristin Wiig and Jason Bateman have all attended the cinema for local premieres.

The Music has contacted Event Cinemas for comment.
