In shocking news out of the UK, all four members of indie band Viola Beach, along with their manager, have died in a car crash in Sweden this weekend.

As BBC reports, the band's car plunged an estimated 25m from a highway bridge into a canal, a little way outside Stockholm around 2am on Saturday morning. Police say the band's car fell through a gap in the barrier of the bridge which had opened to let a boat pass.

An eyewitness told the BBC that "It was very tight. They passed me and in front of me was a taxi and the car smashed the side of this car and then they go in the barrier, then I don't see anything more of the car, the lights were gone," while a police inspector says, "For some reason, the car drove through the barriers and crashed down into the canal. The witnesses just saw a car beside them and kind of disappear."

Kris Leonard, River Reeves, Tomas Lowe, Jack Dakin and manager Craig Tarry were all said to be between 19 and 32 years of age, having formed the band in May last year.

The Warrington, UK band were in Sweden to play their first gig outside the UK at Where Is The Music? festival.

The band's families have started to make statements regarding the band's deaths. Leonard's family said, "Words cannot express the sadness we feel at the loss of our precious Kristian. He was doing the job he loved and will be missed so much by his family and friends."

Reeves' family added, "River had such talent and such humility, such charm and such innocence it seems so unfair that he can be taken so cruelly from us like this."

John Olsson of Swedish band Psykofant has reportedly taken the last known picture of the band, having posted about it on Twitter.

Translated to English, it reads, "On Friday shared lodge with band based in Manchester, "Viola Beach". It was their last gig."

Psykofant also posted a short tribute on Facebook, stating (translated to English), "We don't have words and we are still trying to realize that it's for real. Viola Beach, Chris, Thomas, Jack, river, as well as their manager Craig, all have passed away.

"We mourn for them, their families, friends and loved ones at home in the United Kingdom. It was an honor to play with them, and it's a memory we will carry with for the rest of my life. We will never forget you."
