If you thought you had hit the limit of great pop-punk bands coming out of Australia, say hello to Drastic Park. Channelling the kind of nostalgic, heart-on-your-sleeve music Simple Plan and Avril Lavigne built careers out of, the Melbourne four-piece have taken their sound to new heights with Backdown.

The first single from their upcoming EP, Compound Fracture, due for release on Wednesday, 20 September; the Aussie outfit have unleashed another catchy and ambitious track that is sure to garner the band a whole new legion of fans. Check out the music video below.

In addition to new music, Drastic Park have welcomed a new member to the band, guitarist Elise Felsbourg, who Kill Your Stereo immediately recognised from Excuse For An Exit.

Since forming in 2019, Drastic Park have released 15 tracks and launched two EPs. With Backdown, the band will only go higher, especially when they’re already working with the likes of producer Alan Day (Four Year Strong), engineer Declan White (Thornhill) and Jay Maas (Defeater, State Champs) on mastering duties.

Drastic Park are lead vocalist and guitarist John Stokes, Felsbourg on guitar and backing vocals, bassist and backing singer Chris Tannahill and drummer Joe Larwood.

Stokes said about the fiery new single, “The lyrics of Backdown can relate to anyone who is dealing with someone else in their life who is going through either physical or mental pain. Specifically, the song was written about my wife, who suffers from endometriosis, pots syndrome and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

“Together, they put her in a lot of pain on a constant basis, make her unable to stand up most of the time, and her muscles are slowly deteriorating. The song is about how hard it is for her and for me to help her keep her head above water - but is also about pushing her to keep trying and never back down from the fight.”
