A new Sherbet song seems to be on the way, with singer Daryl Braithwaite revealing that he and keyboardist and backing vocalist Garth Porter have been recording together.

Taking to Facebook last week (2 October), Braithwaite shared a photo from the studio and captioned the post, “This is Rancom studios in Botany. I am there today with Garth recording the vocal on a new Sherbet single. Regards, Daryl.”

At the time of publication, it’s unknown which other members of Sherbet are involved in the recording. Whenever the single arrives, it’ll mark the first time the band has recorded new material together in almost 20 years.

In 2006, Sherbet unveiled the Super Hits compilation, which included two newly recorded songs, Hearts are Insane and Red Dress. They’re the most recent recordings from the band, until now.

The music of the beloved Aussie rockers will be revisited in the upcoming feature documentary, Howzat! The Story of Sherbet, which celebrates and examines the band’s enduring hit, Howzat!, upon its 50th anniversary.

The news that Braithwaite is working on new Sherbet music is surprising not only because it’s been 20 years since their last new releases, but also because the singer announced his retirement from touring in June.

“For some time now it has been increasingly physically challenging for me to sing comfortably and as a result it has taken the joy out of performing, which has always been so important to me,” he wrote on social media.

He continued, “I have loved the 58 years of being a part of the music industry.

“I sincerely want to thank all of the dedicated and loyal supporters and all of the people and organisations that I have been associated with who have been such a significant part of my singing life. With much love and I thank you.”

Braithwaite’s most recent solo album, Forever The Tourist, arrived in 2013, and he released the single It’s You in 2024.
