Musical From ABBA Legends To Tour Australia With Local Names

Launching in April.

Chess The Musical is heading to Australia in 2021 with an impressive local cast announced today.

The production's music is the work of ABBA legends Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, with the book and lyrics by Tim Rice

Actress and Rogue Traders singer Natalie Bassingthwaighte, recent I'm A Celeb contestant and The Bodyguard musical star Paulini, former Australian Idol and musical theatre star Rob Mills and former Home & Away actor Mark Furze are all locked in for the production, joined by opera singers Alexander Lewis and Eddie Muliaumaseali’i, and theatre all-rounder Brittanie Shipway.

Chess The Musical made its debut in 1986 and shares the story of "a complex love triangle combined with dramatic political intrigue, set against the background of the Cold War in the early 1980s, where Soviet and American forces attempt to manipulate an international chess championship for political gains".

The production claimed its spot in pop culture soon after with track I Know Him So Well becoming a huge chart success, taking out the #1 in the UK and #21 in Australia.

The show's run will kick off at Melbourne's Regent Theatre on Thursday 22 April and then head to Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane, wrapping up at QPAC on Thursday 10 June.

Tickets for select shows are on sale now, with new performances in each city and all Adelaide shows on sale from 9am Tuesday 9 February.
