In a huge win for Britney Spears and the #FreeBritney movement in general, Jamie Spears has finally announced his plans to step down as the popstar's conservator.

In court documents released on Thursday, Spears' father announced that he will officially relinquish his role as conservator of his daughter's estate, yielding his 13-year control of Britney's assets and financial decisions.

The decision by Jamie to step down from the role comes after months of controversy and intrigue, with interest in the situation reaching fever pitch following the explosive documentary Framing Britney Spears bringing the conservatorship firmly into the public eye. The Australian premiere became one of the most watched shows on TV back in March this year

The contentious conservatorship, which has spanned 13 years so far since 2008, was also further brought into the spotlight with Spears increasingly acknowledging the ongoing battles via her Instagram account, and ultimately setting a court case in motion to assess the removal of Jamie.

While the latest news of Jamie stepping down has been met with joy and adulation, at the time of publication, Thursday's court document did not stipulate a timetable as to when Jamie would officially relinquish his role in handling Spears' $US60 million estate; but the decision has nonetheless set the wheels firmly in motion to the beginning of the end for the star's nightmare battle, which she had previously described as abusive and humiliating

"We are pleased that Mr Spears and his lawyer have today conceded in a filing that he must be removed," Spear's lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, said in a statement.

“It is vindication for Britney.”

For the time being, Spears will continue to remain under the care of experienced conservator Jodi Montgomery, who looks after the singer's medical and personal affairs. And while Thursday's court documents revealed that while Jamie saw no concrete grounds for his dismissal, he would step down after several remaining issues were resolved.

In a statement released by Spears' lawyer Mathew Rosengart to TMZ, Spears' team are determined to place a firm deadline on the removal of Jamie from his position imminently.

"We look forward to continuing our vigorous investigation into the conduct of Mr Spears, and others, over the past 13 years, while he reaped millions of dollars from his daughter's estate, and I look forward to taking Mr Spears's sworn deposition in the near future," said Rosengart.

"In the interim, rather than making false accusations and taking cheap shots at his own daughter, Mr Spears should step aside immediately."
