"Under the circumstances, his petition is not only legally meritless, it is an abomination."
Following news last month that Britney Spears' controversial conservatorship had been terminated, it’s been revealed that her father, Jamie Spears, is now requesting she cover his legal fees.
As Variety reports, the singer’s attorney has called the request an “abomination”, with Spears’ father asking the court for his daughter’s estate to cover any legal fees associated with winding up the conservatorship, which saw him oversee her life, affairs and finances.
Britney Spears’ attorney Mathew Rosengart said: “Mr. Spears reaped many millions of dollars from Britney as a conservator, while paying his lawyers millions more, all from Britney’s work and hard earned money.
“The conservatorship has been terminated and Mr. Spears was suspended ignominiously. Under the circumstances, his petition is not only legally meritless, it is an abomination. Britney poignantly testified about the pain her father caused her and this only adds to it. This is not what a father who loves his daughter does.”
A legal petition submitted to the court and obtained by Variety states: “Prompt payment on account of Jamie’s attorneys’ fees is necessary to ensure the Conservatorship can be wound up quickly and efficiently to allow Britney to take control of her life as she and Jamie desire.”
Throughout her bid to terminate the conservatorship, Britney Spears was required to cover all of her father’s legal fees as well as her own.

Spears' conservatorship began in 2008 as the pop star underwent a series of apparent mental health struggles including run-ins with paparazzi, with court’s ruling she did not have the capacity to advocate for herself and instead providing a court-appointed lawyer and the controversial conservatorship arrangement with her father Jamie Spears was put in place.
In July this year, the court allowed Spears to hire her own lawyer to advocate for an end to the conservatorship. The case has opened up many questions about the way pop stars are treated by both the music industry and society, with the expectations on public figures under the microscope. The #FreeBritney movement has shon a light not just on conservatorships, but on societal expectations of celebrities and the rights of those in the public eye to have a private life and free agency.
