The band released scorching new LP 'In Deep' earlier this month
Brisbane-based rock quintet Smoking Martha turned a lot of heads back in March with the release of their clip for fiery recent single What's Her Name?, following through earlier this month with the long-awaited arrival of their debut album, In Deep.
The full-length is the culmination of five years of hard work and passion being poured into their collective musical pursuit, their efforts bearing previous fruit in the form of their well-received 2014 debut EP and consistently growing renown as a live force with which to be reckoned.
Over their tenure — along with building a substantive, dedicated following of fans — they've shared stages with acts such as Everclear, Uriah Heep, Seether and even The Runaways' Cherie Currie. In Deep represents the sum of those experiences, and the band put everything they had into bringing together their debut 10-tracker, and they're currently in the midst of a tour to launch their baby and share it with audiences around the country.
Having already knocked over shows in Sydney, Miranda and their home town, the band have another four shows to go on the run, but The Music was fortunate enough to steal enough of their time to have them take us through In Deep's contents track by track.

We started jamming on a riff and it turned into one of our fave songs to play. It’s an aggressive song, with an uptempo groove. The lyrics are direct and open: it’s about struggling with depression and how we can be surrounded but still feel so alone.
Say You're Mine is one of our more dynamic tracks; lyrically, the song is about commitment and fear of.
A bass-heavy swampy sound; it’s about striving, never giving up and sticking together.
A darker sound; it’s about turning into a different person after a bit too much to drink. Heavy but with a twist, by breaking down into a swinging jazz-fuelled midsection, giving the illusion of being in an old dive bar but then punching straight back into a heavy climax.
A riff-heavy, high-energy punk-rock song, lyrically about a one-night stand and insecurity.
This track is very close to our hearts. We wrote it acoustically a little while ago, my way of dealing with death and finally letting go. We added string instruments to bring out the emotion of the song.
Swampy and sexy, the song is a short story about being lured and bewitched.
Simple but powerful, a strong but sexy track, lyrically confronting with the theme of seduction.
A very band-driven, high-energy track, furious rhythm infused with punk-influenced riffs, lyrically tapping into jealousy. A little dark, vulnerable and obsessive.
This is one of our newest tracks on the album, a dynamic track with two songs in one and an explosive ending. It’s a song about our struggles our dreams and desires, tying together the overall theme of the album: In Deep — how far we’ve come and how much further we have to go.
Smoking Martha continue their album launch tour in Melbourne on Friday 2 June, with additional dates in Warrnambool, Geelong and Coolangatta. They also play the massive Dead Of Winter Festival in Brisbane this July.
