Brisbane's New Farm Cinemas will host a charity screening of a documentary about the late rapper Phife Dawg on Thursday, 19 May. 

A revered member of influential hip-hip group A Tribe Called Quest, Phife Dawg (aka Malik Izaak Taylor) died last month from complications relating to diabetes, was considered to be one of the greatest lyricists of his generation.

Beats, Rhymes & Life: Travels Of A Tribe Called Quest examines the genesis of the group, their huge impact on the hip-hop scene and their ultimate break-up in 1998.

The film, directed by Michael Rapaport, features interviews with such hip-hop luminaries as the Beastie Boys, Pharrell Williams, Mos Def, Santigold, Monie Love, Pete Rock, Large Professor, De La Soul, The Jungle Brothers, Mary J Blige and Common.

Presented by Cassette Entertainment, Call & Response and Slingshot Events, the fundraiser will kick off at 7.30pm and DJ Charlie Hustle will be spinning tracks after the film.

All proceeds from the screening will go to Diabetes Queensland.

Only 50 tickets are available and go on sale tomorrow via the cinema's website.
