Sydney's Belvoir Have Dropped Their 2020 Season

Belvoir's 2020 season features stories about the lives of women, seminal texts newly adapted for the stage, and vibrant, youthful works having their Sydney city debut. 

The 10-play season examines the Australia that we live in as we move into our own roaring 20s. 

The season opens with a reprisal of this year's moving rumination on family and mental illness, Every Brilliant Thing, starring Steve Rodgers. 

Belvoir host National Theatre Of Parramatta's Jesus Wants Me For A Sunbeam, which premiered in 2018, based on Peter Goldsworthy's novella about love, loss and sickness.

Dance Nation, a co-production with State Theatre Company Of South Australia, stars Mitchell Butel and Amber McMahon, in a show where adults play teen girls preparing for a dance show contest. 

Carissa Licciardello and Tom Wright adapt Virginia Woolf's seminal essay about women and writing, A Room Of One's Own, starring Anita Hegh. 

Heather Mitchell stars in Caryl Churchill's Escaped Alone, a play that gives a distinctly feminine take on the impending apocalypse.

The Jungle And The Sea, a new work from the team who created this year's Helpmann-winning Counting And Cracking, uses classics Antigone and the Mahābhārata to tell a new story about war, family and reconciliation. 

The creator of Single Asian Female, Michelle Law, writes and stars in Miss Peony, a supernatural comedy focusing on the world of Chinese community beauty pageants.

Nikki Shiels and Helen Thomson feature in a new adaptation of Miles Franklin's My Brilliant Career, a story about a headstrong young woman living in Australia at the turn of the century. 

Cursed! is a First Nations play from Belvoir's Balnaves Fellow Kodie Bedford, which sees a slightly mad family reunite to celebrate their aging matriarch. 

The season closes with a distinctly Australian adaptation of Russian playwright Maxim Gorky's 1904 play, Summerfolk, starring Toby Truslove and Pamela Rabe, moving the setting to the Australian coast, during holiday season, which poses Scott Morrison's election victory question, "How good is Australia?"
