“The time has come when the University has decided to close Unibar."

Popular SA live music venue Adelaide Uni Bar has announced it will close its doors next week.

Opening at the University in 2007, the venue has become an integral part of the state’s live music scene over the years, this week confirming its closure via Facebook.

“The time has come when the University has decided to close Unibar and open its trendy and appealing understudy within the old Mayo Cafe space,” the statement reads.

“While the University will feature a Uni bar, it won’t be Unibar. Its carpet won’t have years of spilled beer layered on top of Bundy & Cola premix deep within its fibres, the stage won’t wear the footprints of decades worth of local, interstate and international talent, the pool tables might not make it down the stairs and your dog tag memberships are likely to get you no more than a smile of recognition of things past.

“We don’t know what the new bar will look like, what it will promote, whether it will have students’ limited budgets in mind or how this contributes to the ever changing face of Adelaide’s live music scene.”

The venue will close on November 3, with three more gigs scheduled before then.

Speaking to The Music, venue manager Gen Turnbull said they would still be hosting the Polaris and Alex The Astronaunt gigs booked at the venue after November 3, marking the final gigs at Adelaide Uni Bar as it currently exists.

“We are unsure if the uni will use the space on occasion, it is all very up in the air,” Turnbull said.

In recent years, Adelaide Uni Bar has hosted the likes of Gang Of Youths, Tash Sultana, Jack River and more.
