Mark RonsonThe art of creating an A-class mash-up is a balancing act of sorts, reliant not only on its separate elements being as disparate as they are unexpectedly complementary, but also scoring extra points when the titles of the source compositions work beautifully together to boot.
So it is in the case of the latest output from respected Virginia-based mash-up artist The Grave Danger, who has comprehensively created a mash-up masterpiece on all fronts — musical and titular alike — with his meshing of Rage Against The Machine's Renegades Of Funk and Mark Ronson & Bruno Mars' Uptown Funk to create, you guessed it, The Renegades Of Uptown Funk. In hindsight, it really was just sitting there for someone to put together, wasn't it?
And that's where The Grave Danger's latest mix truly shines as a demonstration of the artform, not only being clever enough in its naming conventions to elicit an 'oh, you' chuckle or two, but it's also actually an astute arrangement, pitting Mars' soulful, energetic pop vocals over RATM's theoretically antithetical instrumentation in such a manner as to lift both up beyond their original iterations into something wholly different — not to mention inexplicably catchy.
Check it out below.
The Grave Danger is no stranger to making some pretty batshit mash-ups, with previous projects including Zedd & Katy Perry (I Want You To Kiss A Girl), Beyonce & Pharrell (Come Get It Single Ladies), Eminem & The Beastie Boys (No Sleep Without Me) and - brilliantly - Tears For Fears & The Ellen Show (The Ellen D. Shout).
