Brian Wilson, Al Jardine, David Marks Booted From Beach Boys

Mike Love says it makes more financial sense to tour without his fellow original members.

More The Beach Boys More The Beach Boys

After a world tour and the release of a pretty decent new album, The Beach Boys have once again split up, as vocalist Mike Love looks to get back on the road without fellow original Beach Boys Brian Wilson and Al Jardine as well as David Marks, who has been in the band since 1962, for future dates.

After the two shows that are left on their 50thAnniversary Tour, which was in Australia last month, Love will go out on the road as The Beach Boys, taking only Bruce Johnston, who joined the band in 1965, and a bunch of session musicians with him.

“The 50th Reunion Tour was designed to be a set tour with a beginning and an end to mark a special 50-year milestone for the band,” a statement issued by Love said.

He followed on from this statement with a financial justification, fearing that a continued presence of the band's original members could devalue them in the future.

“You've got to be careful not to get overexposed,” Love said. “There are promoters who are interested [in more shows by the reunited line-up], but they've said, 'Give it a rest for a year.' The Eagles found out the hard way when they went out for a second year and wound up selling tickets for $5.”

Jardine has supported a petition to convince Love, who owns the rights to The Beach Boys name, to reinstate the original members.

But the most heart-wrenching comment has come in a CNN report where Wilson, who seemed blindsided by Love's decision, said he couldn't understand why his band mate and cousin was continuing the band with him, Jardine and Marks.

“I'm disappointed and can't understand why he [Love] doesn't want to tour with Al, David and me. We are out here having so much fun. After all, we are the real Beach Boys.”
